The Humble Plumb-bob

What did Pythagoras or Archimedes use to get things level? Here’s a rough and ready alternative to the spirit level:-
When the freely moving string lines up with the pencil line then you know that everything is level.
A small modification could make this plumb-bob level useful for measuring the angle of shed roofs etc.
Want to get two points level over long distances?
This could be a good way of doing it.
Gravity is a wonderful thing, it means that water finds its own level.
So you need a hosepipe to the length you require to measure, some clear plastic tubes to stick in each end of the hosepipe to see the water level.
